The Next Gateway Dynamite Shoot
is Scheduled for

THE MAY 2008 SHOOT HAS BEEN CANCELLED AND OUR NEXT SHOOT WILL BE October 4, 2008.
Our fund raiser continues to fall into hard times. As of January, 2008, our board of directors is coordinating a restructure of the district and department. This is taking a huge amount of our resources and fundraising has been put on hold. Furthermore we still do not have the volunteers necessary to support an event of this size and complexity more than once a year. Those of us who have been working on the shoot for many years are tired of the hundreds of hours' of labor that are required to ensure a shoot of this size is safe, profitable and professional. Thus, our board has decided to host it only once this year. As of this posting, the NEXT SHOOT will be held on October 4, 2008. If you want to stay in the Dynamite Shoot loop, please join our Yahoo Group (below) and we will broadcast information to you though that channel. THANK YOU ALL for your continued support. You have all helped so much with your generous support of our event. We are not sure where we will be getting the funding we will be missing from the other event but we are firefighters and are used to danger! Any contributions are very welcome!

The Gateway Dynamite Shoot is our Fire Department's fund raiser and is scheduled to take place next on October 4, 2008. At this event you can test your shooting skills as you take aim at sticks of real dynamite that are placed from 100 to 830 yards down range!
IMPORTANT WORDS ABOUT MUZZLE BREAKS
We have decided that muzzle breaks WILL be allowed at our events. Recently (September and October, 2004) there had been discussion about banning them but our organizers have decided that these will, in fact, be allowed. Thank you all for your input on this topic!

HOW THIS EVENT WORKS: Each shooter gets 2 shots at a given target. If the target is hit it will explode and the shooter splits the pot for that target with our Fire Department. If they miss, they get back in line. REGARDLESS OF THE DISTANCE TO THE TARGET, EACH TARGET IS A SINGLE POP CAN FILLED WITH EXPLOSIVES. THUS, FROM 100 YARDS TO 830+ YARDS EACH OF THESE TARGETS IS EXACTLY THE SAME SIZE AND CARRIES THE SAME EXPLOSIVE PUNCH. WE HAVE NEVER RETRIEVED A TARGET THAT DID NOT EXPLODE. Above is a photo of the long distance rifle range. The target areas have been colored in this photo to show the ranges. Note the yellow targets in the lower right corner show the furthest of the Hunter Bench Rest range (350 - 430 yards) the green targets in the middle show the Bench Rest Unlimited Rifle Range (550 - 610 yards) and the pink targets near the center represent the Big Dog range (775 - 830 yards). All dynamite targets are the same size at our event...they are simply a soda pop can filled with explosives. The photograph (above) shows their location...obviously at these distances they are not this easy to see! Note too that this image shows their approximate location and disbursement. Also the Hunter Bench Rest range continues to off the image to the right and down.

This event draws top shooters from many states. We have regular shooters who attend from Colorado, Texas, California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah to name but a few. At our most recent shoot these skilled shooters won a combined total of over $5,000 in cash prizes!
This event welcomes participants and curiosity seekers. Ear protection is encouraged!

and a current Hunter Safety Card.
Our volunteers work hard to keep things safe and organized!
We also have a great pistol shoot range. Come and test your skills against other top shooters!
Food, Souvenirs and Community Events will also be available. Plenty of parking and, hopefully, sunny weather!
THIS EVENT HAS BEEN HELD IN GATEWAY FOR OVER 40 YEARS. IN THAT TIME WE HAVE ONLY HAD 2 CANCELLATIONS DUE TO BAD WEATHER.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: From the Grand Junction Area: Take Rt. 50 to Whitewater. Turn S.W. on Colorado Rt. 141. Drive 43 miles to Gateway. The shoot is behind the Community Center near Mile Post 111.
