Captain Moroni
A MAN OF FAITH

Seventy years before the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Moroni, at the age of twenty five, was chosen to be the Chief Military Commander of the Nephite armies. The Nephites were a remnant of the tribe of Joseph that escaped the Babylonian invasion and destruction of early Jerusalem. Christ made reference to this early American civilization when he said, “And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd” (John 10:16). So it was while the Jews in Jerusalem were ripening in iniquity sufficient to crucify their Lord and Savior, Captain Moroni and the prophet Alma were working together to protect and save the Nephite people from the wars and conspiracies surrounding the wicked and prideful ruling powers of their era.

Today modern historians have given Captain Moroni credit as being one of the world’s greatest military geniuses. It is wise to recognize, we are under attack today, just as the Nephites were over two thousand years ago, only we fight an enemy of a different kind. Captain Moroni’s example offers a guiding light as we choose to defend our liberty; for defending the right is as important today as it has been throughout the ages. May we follow in Captain Moroni’s footsteps and become a standard worthy of following. Just as Moroni we can be defenders of truth and righteousness. Yea, if only all men “were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would [be] shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men” (Alma 48:11-17).
